UMS Open Lecture – Bilingual Classes in Reality
A public lecture on modern education was held last week, May 25, 2026 with Ms. Elly (Elisabeth Anita, the Primary Program Principal as the guest speaker. The open lecture is held by Muhammadiyah University Surakarta (UMS), attended by 200 students of semester 4. The session focused on the advantages of bilingual classes in Indonesia, as well as the challenges and opportunities for graduates of Primary School Teacher Education programs, known as PGSD.
During the lecture, Ms. Elly shared how FIS as a school that offer bilingual classes are increasingly preferred by parents because they help students develop proficiency in two languages from an early age. At the same time, this approach supports stronger communication skills, broader global opportunities, improved critical thinking, and greater cultural awareness as experienced by FIS students. She added that the immersive environment in bilingual schools allows students to use both English and Indonesian naturally across academic subjects and daily activities, preparing them for higher education and international careers.
This moment is surely a valuable moment for FIS to share to future teachers in UMS expressing confidence that with the right preparation, PGSD UMS graduates can become effective bilingual teachers and contribute to shaping globally competent students. Surely it is a way for FIS to also contribute to better education in the future.
