Toddler – Sensory: Smelling Exploration
In the Science lesson, Toddler students explored their sense of smell by smelling some familiar scents such as tea, coffee and citrus aromas. This activity is related to the theme they are learning talking about a Superhero with the super powers including the five senses.
In the fist chapter of the lesson, the teacher reviewed The Supertato story and told them about his brave and kind actions to save the vegetables. Ts also mentioned some facts and characteristics of the Superheroes that make them strong and special (especially their 5 senses superpower). Then, the teacher showed pineapple, lemon, and two jars containing coffee and tea powder. All students showed great curiosity when the teacher presented and explored those object by their scents, textures, and colours. Their eagerness to learn shone up when the teacher gave them opportunity to explored those object by touching and smelling them. This fun and meaningful learning carried out by having a game of guessing the aromas blindfolded. Most of them could recognise those scents very well since they often encounter those smells at home.
Smelling activities help the students to develop their senses, which is closely linked to their sense of taste. It also boost their language skill by talking about the different fragrances and matching them to something they already know as it also builds their memory and cognitive abilities.
