Toddler – Maths: Let’s Count The Minibeast
This activity aimed to engage children in sensory play, develop their counting skills, and introduce them to the role of worms in the ecosystem through interactive storytelling and hands-on learning experiences. The activities included sensory exploration with worm toys in slimy brown flour, rote counting while wiggling like worms, and a storytelling session featuring Superworm. Additionally, students watched an educational video about the ecological importance of worms and participated in movement-based counting exercises with worm toys. They also formed numbers 0-6 using the toys and counted worms retrieved from the sensory play session, reinforcing early math skills in a fun and engaging manner.
The activities effectively combined sensory experiences, movement, and storytelling to support children’s learning. Through these exercises, students developed fine and gross motor skills, practiced rote counting and number recognition, and gained an understanding of worms’ vital role in nature. The interactive approach kept students engaged, and future activities could incorporate additional hands-on experiences, such as observing live worms or creating a small compost bin to extend their understanding of the topic.
