Secondary 2 – Learning Project : Promoting Environmentally friendly Bar Soap

Secondary 2 students conducted a semester I Learning Project entitled “Promoting environmentally friendly bar soap” from 7 to 16 December 2022. It was a collaborative learning project of four subjects: Bahasa Indonesia, Chemistry, Math, and Physics. The aim was to develop pro-environmental awareness and behavior of students and give them opportunities to dive deeper into the topics they have learned this semester.

The activities in this Learning Project were based on phases in the Launch Cycle from day one to eight, consisting of “Look, listen and learn,” “Ask tons of questions,” “Understand the problem, “Navigate the idea, “Create the prototype, “Highlight and fix” and “Launch the product.”
Students started the project by gaining information from videos and articles about the negative impact of throwing used cooking oil into the environment. They then figured out ways to reuse the used-cooking oil to produce other valuable products. A particular way to reuse used-cooking oil was to process it into simple soap through a saponification reaction, a subtopic they have learned in chemistry this semester.

Furthermore, students were asked to create short and informative Public Advertisement Service (PAS) videos to share their knowledge with others in Bahasa Indonesia. Here, they learn how to apply effective language in advertising. They also use various math and physics knowledge to help them create the PAS video. Students completed the project by showing and uploading the video to their social media. They also shared experiences and values gained throughout this Learning Project in an online class meeting. ***
