Primary 6 – Visual Arts: Identity and Expression

Primary 6 students learnt about how to express themselves through personal symbol and colors under the theme Identity and Expression. The students were asked to draw it in A3 paper. First, teacher had brainstorm session with the students to identify their persona, such as their characters, favorite colors, favorite hobbies, favorite icons, etc. Next, teacher and students discussed about various ways to represent their personal identities, such as through portrait drawing, making initial brand letters taken from their own names or through narrative story with pictures. Students were given freedom to choose one of the ways.

As a reference, teacher gave reference in the whiteboard about drawing the symbols through initial letters using his own name completed with the decorations. For the next activity, students were sketching their ideas in a piece of paper. Teacher also gave the students home task where they had to do an exploration through internet at home to find another references of drawing personal symbols and they could print and bring the printed information to the class in the next meeting.

Teacher asked the students to design their personal identity symbol based on the sketch they have made before. They sketched their own symbols and completed with information about the meaning of it. They did it in A3 paper. They had some options to color their creation, whether using acrylic paint, colored pencils or color markers. Students also received some feedback related to their creation both from teacher and friends as part of their learning process to make the creation.

The purpose of this learning activities is to give students an opportunity to express their feeling related to personal identity through artworks or painting. It also boost the students’ creativity to represent their personal identity. Through the whole activities, students are exposed to gain information and experience related to their personal identities. They also given chance to pick one best artwork that really present themselves personally. The activities such as receiving information, discussion, exploration, sketching, making the design and learn from the feedback, help the students to develop the theme proportionally through meaningful learning processes.

Creating and presenting artwork that reflects their identity builds confidence in expressing themselves. This can translate into greater willingness to share ideas or take creative risks in other areas, such as writing, public speaking, or innovative thinking. ***
