Primary 6 – Science: Wore the Organ

Breathe in.. breathe out.. breathe in.. breathe out.. get that oxygen to our body. P6 students learned about respiratory and circulatory system in Science class. They learned that there are some organs in our body that help us in breathing, they are nose, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, lungs, alveoli and diaphragm. The oxygen that are taken from respiratory system will enter the blood. Later, our heart and blood vessels will help us in delivering the blood rich in oxygen to all parts of our body. This oxygen is really essential to our body as it helps us to release energy from the food we eat. To help students understand better about how the systems work, they had a hands-on activity to wear their respiratory and circulatory system organ in the form of plastic shirt.

The activity began with the students drew and coloured all organs in human respiratory and circulatory system on a drawing paper. This step seemed easy but actually it was the most challenging one since students needed to consider the shape, size and colour of the organs. After they finished with the drawing, they could cut and arrange it on a big plastic bag. This step was the most fun process since it felt like playing a puzzle. Students tried to arrange each organ closely to its original place, so when they wore the plastic shirt, it looked like the organs are outside from their body. The last step was to cut the bottom part of the plastic bag so they could wear it like a shirt.

After the plastic shirt has been finished, students proudly wore their creation and showed it to their friends and teacher. Not only making the plastic shirt, students were also asked to present how the organs work to help us breathing and pumping the blood by pointing each organ on their shirt. Here, the students were not only memorising the theory of respiratory and circulatory system, but they also tried to relate it with their own organs. This activity allowed students to know better about their body and keep their awareness to take care of their body and health, since our respiratory and circulatory system organs have never stopped working from the day we were born until now.

This activity gave the students an experience to not only memorize the theory of respiratory and circulatory system, but also use a fun and creative way to understand how the systems work in our body. It also raised students’ sense of responsibility to make the best product for themselves and be proud of their creation. The presentation time also helped the students to train their confidence as well as public speaking, since they needed to present it with the correct and clear explanation. ***
