Primary 6 – Science: Making a Food Web

In Science class, P6 students explored the concepts of Food Chains and Food Webs. A food chain is a diagram that illustrates the feeding relationships between living organisms. In an ecosystem, a single organism can be part of multiple food chains, which is why a food web—a collection of interconnected food chains—is useful for understanding these complex relationships.

After learning the material, students were assigned to create a food web for a chosen ecosystem. First, they researched the living organisms within their selected ecosystem, using the internet to gather information on different species and their feeding relationships. This research helped them determine how various organisms interact as part of the ecosystem’s food web.

Next, the students created a simple model of the food web in the classroom. This hands-on activity allowed them to explore food chains and food webs beyond the textbook, making the learning experience more tangible. As they built their models, students made their thinking visible, which helped deepen their understanding of the material.

Through this activity, students practiced sorting and organizing information from the internet and used it to construct a scientific model. They were enthusiastic about applying their creativity to represent the food web, gaining valuable experience in both research and scientific modeling. ***
