Primary 6 – Science: Learn about Human Reproductive System and Puberty
“Growing up? I’m ready!” That phrase was heard as P6 students began learning about the Human Reproductive System and Puberty in their Science class. In this chapter, they were introduced to the parts of the male and female reproductive organs, as well as the physical changes that occur during puberty. At first, many students felt a bit shy, thinking the topic was something only adults talk about. However, after a clear explanation from the teacher, they came to understand that the reproductive system is just like any other system in the human body, such as the digestive, respiratory, or circulatory systems.
After studying the material at school, students were given a home-link task titled “Heart to Heart with My Parent.” In this task, they were asked to answer several questions together with their parents. The aim was to create a warm and open moment for parents and children to talk about the students’ journey through puberty. During these conversations, students could learn practical ways to navigate this phase from their parents, while parents had the opportunity to guide and support their children in becoming responsible and confident teenagers. Many students and parents found this to be a meaningful and heartfelt experience.
Back at school, students were assigned another task: creating an infographic about puberty. They were grouped by gender so that each student could comfortably share the physical changes they experience and discuss tips for dealing with challenges. These insights came from both class discussions and their home-link conversations with parents. After discussing in groups, the students began designing their infographics. They worked hard to clearly communicate information about puberty and included eye-catching illustrations to make the content more accessible and engaging for readers.
Learning about puberty and the reproductive system is a crucial moment for students. It goes beyond textbook science — it teaches them how to care for their bodies and prepare for becoming respectful and responsible individuals. With the right information and guidance, we hope students can face the puberty phase with confidence and positivity. More importantly, they can also learn to support and respect their peers as they go through this important stage of growth together. ***
