Primary 6 – LeaPro: Local Roots, Global Impacts
Primary 6 Learning Project takes the theme Local Roots, Global Impact. The theme is studied separately by students in social studies (IPS) about the utilization of natural resources and in IPC about the impact of local businesses on the global economy. Students use the knowledge and experience they gained when visiting Trangsan village as part of Look, Listen, Learn. They watched a video of their experience when they visited there. From that experience, they had the opportunity to interview several teachers and the S-Team, who are micro-business operators. From the results of the interviews, the students obtained data that some sources were not aware of the impact of micro-entrepreneurs on global life.
When they entered the Navigate Ideas phase, the students discussed ideas on possible products or forms of presentation to share about processing and added value to the natural, globalization, local business, the impact of local business on the global economy, and how to become responsible consumers. They also discussed about the classroom layout design and the information content that they would present. From this activity, students practiced being more critical and challenged themselves to complete the product they were going to present.
Entering the Create Prototype phase, students work in groups to create products based on the ideas and concepts they have discussed. The forms of the presentations made by the P6 students during the Launch varied, ranging from showing videos of their study trip to Trangsan, walking museums, boxes of information, to exit slips given to the audience who visited their exhibition. Students also prepared and sent invitations to teachers and students from P3, P4, and P5.
These series of LeaPro activities not only deepen students’ knowledge and skills on the themes they have already studied. However, learning LeaPro using the Launch Cycle nurtures creativity, curiosity, and also teamwork. Not only that, but this learning is also becoming more meaningful and improving because students are revisiting the knowledge they have already acquired.
From this series of LeaPro activities, students have become more aware of the global issues they encounter in everyday life. This is evident from their increasingly concerned attitude when purchasing products. They strive to buy local products. In addition, students are also becoming more skilled when working in groups. They are starting to bravely express their ideas and thoughts when working on each phase. ***
