Primary 6 – IPC: Mindful Yoga Breathing

In IPC Brainwave: Metacognition topic, students are learning some strategies to be mindful. In the previous meeting, they discussed and learnt the meaning of mindful in which they must be aware of the body, mind and feeling in present time by taking a step back and observing the content on mind. They also learnt that mindful will be essential for planning, monitoring, evaluating, reflecting and regulating the emotion. The students were introduced to the effective way to be mindful by having mindful breathing. They observed that yoga and breathing could help improve learning because deep, slow breathing causes the breath rate to go down, and it sends signals to the brain to relax. The students learnt that it also increases the ability to memorise and focus.

So, P6 students had a mindful yoga breathing class with the teachers. This integrated activity was started by recalling the knowledge about mindfulness and respiratory system in Science lesson. Then, it was continued by checking and recording their oxygen level and heart rate before the exercise using oximeter. It was followed by practicing some yoga movements dan poses, such as mountain, tree and chair pose. Next, they checked and recorded their oxygen level and heart rate after the exercise. In the end, they concluded that the strategy to be mindful could be done by breathing. Proper breathing technique could be practiced by having mindful yoga. The students experienced the correct way of breathing through the nose to boost oxygen intake. They found out that it improved focus and not easily to get fatigue and sick. It was the first time for the students to have mindful yoga breathing. So it was so interesting and challenging at the same time. ***
