Primary 6 – English: Figurative Language in Poetry

In Unit 3, P6 students learned about poetry. At the beginning of the lesson, students were reminded about the features of a poem, such as mood, rhyme, and figurative language. This unit focused on five kinds of figurative language. During the recalling, students were excited to mention examples of simile, metaphor, alliteration, personification, and onomatopoeia.

Afterward, the class moved on to the main activity. Students read a poem about pomegranate from their Learner’s Book together. Then, they were sitting in pairs. Each pair should think of one fruit. Students make five sentences related to that fruit. They use simile, alliteration, metaphor, personification, and onomatopoeia in each sentence.

Each pair recited their poem in front of the class. The other students had to make notes during the recital, especially when they disagreed with their friends’ examples. The note was used as feedback for the performer. Later, they needed to revise their sentences and submit the paper to the teacher. The teacher closed the meeting by asking for three verbal exit slips. ***
