
Primary 6 – English: Arguments
P6 students has a prominent persuasive skill. They used their persuasion to get what they need and want daily. In Semester 1, P6 students learn two non-fiction text; one of them is argument text. When they entered this unit, they were enthusiastic to practice arguing in a formal setting.
At the beginning of the lesson, students learned to distinguish the difference between one sided and balanced argument, for they were going to compose a balanced argument as the product of this unit. For the text structure, students acquired the knowledge on how to compose interesting introduction and conclusion paragraph. They were exposed to certain topics and were asked to list the pro and contra argument for each topic. Before composing the text, students learned the correct tenses used in their text as well as practiced to write passive voice to add formal effect.
On the third meeting, students were paired. They were assigned to a topic and worked together to compose the argument within the pair. They used the knowledge they had learned from the previous meeting to create interesting paragraphs. They submitted their draft and made some revisions based on teacher’s written feedbacks. In pair, students presented their arguments. They managed to confidently deliver their discussion in front of the class. ***
