Primary 5 – Visual Arts: Realistic Drawing

Primary 5 students recently took their first steps into the world of Realism by learning how to draw objects realistically. To begin, the teacher introduced the concept of Realism—its definition, basic techniques, and examples of famous artists and their works. Students were also guided through the five essential steps of drawing real-life objects: observation, sketching, forming the object, adding details, and finishing. A short tutorial on the whiteboard gave them a clear picture of how each step should be carried out.

For the practical activity, students started with observation outside the classroom, exploring the school area to choose an object from real life. Using a worksheet provided by the teacher, they described the object they had selected before sketching it on A4 paper. Once satisfied with their initial sketch, they moved on to refining the drawing, adding details, and completing the finishing touches with coloured pencils.

Throughout the process, students were encouraged to focus on learning step by step, rather than only on the final result. As this was their first experience working on Realism and using larger paper formats, they learned to adapt and pay attention to proportions. The activity also provided opportunities to share their work, receive feedback from both teachers and peers, and reflect on their learning experience.

The final artworks will be included in the Term 1 portfolio, serving as a record of their growth in both technique and creativity. More importantly, the activity gave students the chance to explore art from their own perspective, deepen their understanding of a new drawing style, and practice the valuable skill of giving and receiving constructive feedback.

In this way, the spirit of “Learning by Doing” was clearly demonstrated, as students experienced a complete creative process—observing, practicing, reflecting, and growing through art. ***
