Primary 5 – Visual Arts: Design Thinking in Arts
Primary 5 students learnt about Design Thinking as a tool to solve problems creatively. It has phases as the learning process, such as Emphatize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test. In this case, students were asked to identify some case/problems that they pick randomly and find solutions for the problems with designing visual products. In designing the products, students experience some processes, like doing observation or interview people to find out the problems, defining the main problem, making some optional solutions then they come up with a best solution and finally they will test the solution in form of presentation. At first, students were having discussion about Design Thinking and the phases on it. They also having practise in solving problems for some cases stated by the teacher. Once they have known the problems, they start to brainstorming some ideas of the products. They also make the draft of their plan in a paper. For the next meetings, students will explore their plan and ideas through the phases in Design Thinking.
This learning activities was quite new for students where they have to face the making processes of their product’s design orderly. It gives opportunity for the students to broaden their knowledge through real experiences by collecting valid data of problems through observation or interview, summarize the main problem and figure out some possible solutions in form of visual products where they need to create it in real in form of poster, 3D creation, diorama, booklet, etc. They also received feedback of their thoughts as part as reflection or consideration to fix their products. For addition, through those activities, students were gain values, like building thinking schema creatively, manage solutions and make it into a creation and also gain their self confidence through interview and presentation.
