Primary 5 – Science: Digestive System

Previously, P5 students learned about the importance of a balanced diet for our body. It is explained that the food they eat has to be broken down into simpler substances before their bodies can use it. In this session, the students learned the digestion process which happens in the digestive system. They experienced the food journey starting from the mouth by eating a slice of melon and two pieces of grapes.

The students had to chew the food around 32 times. They were aware that mouth, teeth, tongue, and saliva worked together to make the food smooth enough so that they could swallow it. Next, they used the Science Book to learn the complete food journey. By using real food, P5 students experienced that the digestive system is made up of many organs and digestive juices help to break down different types of food. ***
