Primary 5 – Learning Project: Small Steps to Make A Better Environment
Celebrating Learning Project, P5 students had a campaign entitled “Small Steps to Make A Better Environment” to S-Team, P2 and P4 students. In this campaign, the students encouraged other people to hand in hand creating a better environment through being aware of using materials which can be harmful for the enviroment.
For the first phase in Look Listen and Learn, they watched videos and read explanation texts about harmful materials they might find around them, such as plastics, Styrofoam and overuse tissue. They made a mind map to record the essential data from the comprehending texts process. They also had group discussion to share and formulate questions which were important to understand the actual problem. After having discussion, the students had an interview with S-Team and observation around the school. They had to find out real data to identify the problem happened, especially in terms of harmful materials for the environment that related to the cleanliness around the school area. Through this process, they found out that the use of plastics for food, drink or stuff containers as well as overuse tissue at school became the potential problem towards this issue.
To solve this problem, the students started to plan about some ways to avoid the damage caused by decomposed materials. Through the process of observing and analyzing data collected, they found out that having a campaign with more creative and various media could be a solution to raise others’ awareness to have small steps to save the environment from the use of harmful materials.
For the next process, the students tried to navigate ideas to find out what kinds of media they can use for the campaign, i.e. making video, doing roleplay or creating poster as tools to deliver message, along with the reasons why they chose it. They had to consider about the effectiveness of each media, as well as the way they transferred the knowledge to school society and the content that they would share to others.
At the end, during the campaign day, the students enthusiastically shared the message of kinds of materials which could be harmful for the environment, why those materials were dangerous, and what steps we could do to reduce the use of those materials around school area to keep the school environment clean.
This activity is also aimed to deepen the student’s understanding about harmful materials for the environment and build their awareness in order to reduce the use of plastics and avoid overuse tissue. Through this meaningful activity, the students can build communication and critical thinking skills to enhance their awareness in terms of choosing useful materials rather than harmful materials for certain purposes.
By having this valuable understanding, the students can take action and ask others to hold hand in hand making a better environment. Moreover, this activity is also one of the ways to raise students’ awareness about their role as part of society, e.g. taking a simple action to save the environment and create better world someday. ***
