Primary 5 – Global Perspective: Students Explore Material Changes through Cooking Experiment
On Monday, November 10, students carried out an exciting experiment as part of their IPC unit “Making New Materials.” The activity focused on exploring physical and chemical changes through a hands-on cooking experiment guided by their teachers.
Before beginning the cooking session, students worked collaboratively in groups to research different cooking activities that demonstrate physical and chemical changes. Using information from the internet, they discussed and identified possible examples, then made predictions about what kinds of changes might occur during their chosen activity. Each group also divided responsibilities equally to ensure teamwork and smooth coordination during the experiment.
During the cooking process, students carefully observed the changes happening to the ingredients, from color and texture to smell and analyzed whether those changes were physical or chemical. The experiment allowed them to test their predictions and connect scientific concepts to real-life experiences.
Through this hands-on activity, students not only deepened their understanding of how new materials can be formed through various process, but also developed some skills. The experiment encouraged them to solve problems as a team. For example, managing time and handling tools safely to interpreting unexpected results. They also gained opportunities to strengthen communication and cooperation, when they shared ideas clearly, listened to one another, and coordinated with each other effectively to prove their prediction.
Through this Global Perspective material, students could realize that physical and chemical changes happen all around them, such as, melting cheese and frying the catfish and making toast. By learning these processes in daily life, students gained a wider perspective on how this knowledge applied. The skills they developed, such as teamwork, observation, and critical thinking, are valuable for their everyday experiences.
