Primary 5 – English: Persuasive Writing

Primary-5 students have learned many forms of persuasion, from advertisement, commentary, persuasive letters, and persuasive text. Students’ eagerness to learn was shown by how fluently they gave examples of persuasive texts they could find daily.

Persuasive text is a non-fiction text that students learn in Unit 9. At the first meeting, students learned the function and purpose of persuasive writing. They were introduced to persuasive devices, like rhetorical questions, imperative verbs, powerful adjectives, and alliteration, to make a persuasion more convincing.

Students were asked to write a simple persuasive text for the final project. The topic was ‘Using a mobile phone for tasks in the classroom.’ Students mentioned facts and opinions to support the topic. They conducted a survey and made a graph to strengthen their persuasion. Students chose a viewpoint and language style for their text.

After finishing the texts, the teacher asked students to peer-check their friends’ work. This also gave students the experience of identifying the persuasive devices that their friends included in their text. Students made necessary revisions before presenting the text to their friends. This is an example of a graph made by a student. ***
