Primary 5 – English: Behind the Scenes: Preparing for Drama Performance

In Unit 7 English lessons, P5 students have been exploring the elements of a playscript and the art of storytelling. To put their learning into practice, the students are currently engaged in a Drama Performance project. This initiative aims to go beyond the classroom by integrating language skills with creative expression, allowing students to see how written scripts are transformed into live action.

This project is all about giving students the chance to lead and make their own decisions. It all started with a class vote. Students looked through their reading books, suggested their favourite stories and voted for the one they wanted to perform. This process allowed students to practice decision-making and respect each other’s opinions.

Once the story was chosen, students had the freedom to choose which team they wanted to join based on their interests: the Script Team, the Artistic Team or the Cast Team. To help students experience a real preparation process, auditions were conducted for each team. The Script Team practiced writing short scenes for the play. The Artistic Team shared their creative ideas for costumes and props. The Cast Team showed their acting skills by practicing lines from the book.

After the audition process, the final teams were announced. Students then began working on their own responsibilities according to their team roles. Throughout this preparation stage, students not only practiced English, but also learned how to collaborate, share ideas and contribute their talents to achieve a common goal.

Along the way, they also faced several challenges. Some students found it difficult to memorize their lines, while others had to learn how to listen to different ideas when working in a team. The Artistic Team needed to think creatively about how to design simple props and costumes using available materials and the Script Team worked hard to organize their ideas into clear scenes. Despite these challenges, students continued to support one another and find solutions together. It has been wonderful to see them taking ownership of their work, building confidence and bringing the chosen story to life.
