Primary 4 – Orientation: Science Experiment

P4 students reminisced the joy of learning Science by conducting an experiment during orientation week. They did a very exciting discovery by writing a secret message using invisible ink made from baking soda and reveal it using curcuma.

The activity started with an instruction to describe themselves in one word. They used a mixture of baking soda and warm water as the ink. The students used a cotton swab as a ‘pen’. It created an invisible ink so no one, except the writer, knew the written message. Then, they mixed curcuma powder and hand sanitizer. The mixture was used to reveal the hidden message. The students just needed to apply on the dried paper using a paintbrush. They watched in awe as their secret message appeared like magic in bright red or orange letters. By doing the experiment, P4 students learnt a chemical reaction when curcuma touched the dried baking soda, it turned reddish-orange and revealed the hidden message.

Through this activity, P4 students learnt that an exciting experiment could be conducted using ingredients from the kitchen. It showed that Science concept relates to the students’ daily life. This experience will help them to explore their surroundings more as well as challenge their logical and critical thinking skills. Skills which are important to face the future. ***
