Primary 4 – Learning Project: Vanishing Rainforest, Vanishing Ecosystem

At first, students went strolling around Manahan to observe and identify changes of the green area. The teacher acted as a guide to explain the information needed to strengthen students’ prior knowledge and awareness. To give a strong foundation of knowledge, students listed down some questions they wanted to ask related to the importance of rainforests and the green area around them. Then, they tried to answer it by themselves. Next, students watched the movie in the classroom. This movie helped them correct the answer they made before and enriched their knowledge. Lastly, the students needed to write a summary of the information they got. This helps students identify what needs to be solved and ensures a clear goal to work toward and the way students think about a solution.

The following day, the students explored the ideas on how to educate and persuade others to protect and sustain the rainforest and the ecosystem using visual campaigns such as trivia, posters or flyers. Then, students created the prototype from ideas that they decided the day before. With the teacher’s guidance, students made the visual campaign using used paper, used boxes and other used stuff. In the last phase, students were encouraged to present their posters and flyers in front of the caregivers and the S-Team. They seemed to be very confident and happy sharing to others.

From the LeaPro activity, the students not only recall their knowledge and improve their skills about the material they have learnt in IPC and Science, but they can also motivate and inspire others to protect and sustain the environment through simple yet impactful action. They suggested things like using used stuff whenever possible, using the oil wisely, taking the tissue and paper wisely, planting, watering the plant, and so on.

This activity helps students become more aware of their surroundings and face problems bravely, creatively and effectively in routine. This activity also improves their ability to work as a team which is essential for learning, practice problem-solving and understand complex concepts. It gives chance to students to share their ideas clearly and confidently in front of new people, even persuade others to do a simple action on a daily basis. ***
