Primary 4 – English: Visualizing Fantasy Character

In English lesson, P4 students learnt about fantasy texts. Students explored about the features and how authors use descriptive language to create imaginary creatures. Students read a story entitled ‘Moin and the Monster’. In the story, they were given description of the character that included several similes. Then, students were asked to draw the monster based on the description provided.

This activity was chosen to help students connect language with visualization. By reading the similes carefully, they could imagine how each part of the monster looked. The activity also encouraged students to pay attention to descriptive words and understand how writers build imagery in fantasy stories.

As a result, students became more engaged and creative. They didn’t only practice reading comprehension but also artistic interpretation. Drawing helped them process the meaning behind each simile instead of just memorizing it. This showed that visualizing text can deepen understanding and make abstract descriptions more concrete. The combination of reading and drawing made the learning experience meaningful and enjoyable.

Furthermore, this activity nurtures imagination, critical thinking, and language appreciation. When students learn to visualize what they read, they become better readers and storytellers. This skill can later help them in writing their own fantasy texts, using vivid descriptions that bring their characters to life. It also fosters confidence in expressing ideas both visually and verbally. ***
