Primary 4 – English: Producing Advertisement
P4 students moved from planning their advertisement project to producing the actual video advertisement. Working in their groups, students recorded scenes based on the storyboard they had created previously. They practiced acting, delivering persuasive expressions, and presenting their chosen food or drink products creatively. After recording, students independently added sound effects that matched each scene to make the advertisement more engaging and realistic. They also edited the videos by arranging clips, adjusting transitions, and combining visuals with audio to produce a complete advertisement project. Throughout the activity, students actively applied the advertising techniques they had learned from the previous lessons.
This activity happened through a collaborative and hands-on learning process that allowed students to experience authentic project-based learning. Students first discussed and divided roles within their groups, such as actors, camera operators, editors, and sound effect creators. The process worked effectively because students were directly involved in every stage of production, from recording to editing. By creating the advertisements themselves, students could better understand how visual presentation, persuasive language, and sound effects work together to influence audiences. The activity also worked well because it connected creativity with technology, allowing students to explore digital tools in a meaningful and enjoyable way. As students experimented with editing and sound effects, they learned through practice and problem-solving rather than through theory alone.
The activity had a significant effect on students’ creativity, collaboration, and communication skills. Through the process of recording and editing their own advertisement videos, students became more confident in expressing ideas and presenting products creatively. They also learned how to apply advertising strategies in real situations, such as using catchy expressions, attractive visuals, and suitable sound effects to capture attention. This activity can be used as an effective learning strategy because it encourages students to combine language skills, critical thinking, teamwork, and digital literacy in one project. The reason the activity produced positive results was because students were actively engaged and given ownership of their learning process. As a result, students showed greater enthusiasm, stronger participation, and improved understanding of how advertisements are created and delivered effectively.
This project provided students with meaningful opportunities to use English in a communicative and creative way that reflected real-life situations. Through the process of planning, recording, and editing advertisements, students practiced using English to express ideas, persuade audiences, and deliver messages confidently with their peers. The advertisement project was not merely about mastering how advertisements are created, but about using advertisements as a medium for communication. By actively speaking, discussing, and performing in English, students developed greater confidence in using the language naturally and meaningfully. In addition, the collaborative nature of the activity encouraged students to communicate spontaneously, negotiate ideas, and interact using English in a supportive environment. Overall, the project helped students see English not only as a school subject, but also as a practical tool for daily communication, creativity, and self-expression in real-world contexts.
