Primary 4 – English: Advertisement Project
In English lesson, P4 students learnt about advertisement. Students were introduced to the concept of advertising through two engaging video advertisements shown by the teacher. They observed several important elements in the advertisements, such as the plot, the purpose of the message, and the creative features that made the ads attractive to viewers. Through teacher-led questioning, students identified that advertisements are designed not only to introduce a product, but also to persuade audiences by using interesting visuals, memorable language, and clear messages. To enrich their understanding, students also watched a video about the making of sound effects and discovered that audio plays an important role in making advertisements more lively and appealing.
This activity worked effectively because students were first exposed to authentic examples before being asked to create their own project. By watching real advertisements, students could directly observe how ideas were presented in a simple but persuasive way. The guided questions helped students break down each advertisement into understandable parts, allowing them to see how the plot, visuals, language, and purpose were connected. The addition of the sound effect video also strengthened their understanding by showing how audio can shape mood and attract attention. This sequence supported students’ learning naturally, as they moved from observing, analyzing, and understanding to preparing for their own creative production.
The activity had a strong effect on students’ understanding and readiness to create their own advertisement project. By analyzing advertisement examples first, students gained a clearer picture of what makes an advertisement effective and how advertising techniques can be applied in their own work. This helped them become more confident when working in groups to choose a product, plan a storyboard, and develop ideas for visuals and sound effects. The activity also encouraged students to use critical thinking and creativity at the same time, as they were not only learning the structure of advertisements but also applying it in a meaningful context. As a result, students were able to begin their project with clearer direction, stronger ideas, and better collaboration.
This activity gave students meaningful learning experiences that were closely connected to real-life contexts. Advertisements are part of students’ everyday lives, whether they see them on television, social media, or in public spaces, so learning how advertisements work helped them become more aware and critical viewers. At the same time, creating their own advertisement project allowed students to experience how persuasive communication is designed in real situations. Beyond language learning, the activity also strengthened collaboration, creativity, and media awareness, which are essential skills in daily life. Through this project, students not only learned how to create advertisements, but also developed practical communication skills that can be applied beyond the classroom.
