Primary 3 – Science: Topic Test on Friction and Gravity

P3 had a Topic Test on Friction and Gravity. Their test consists of four parts. The first two parts dealt a lot with knowledge acquisition. The questions on these two parts required the students to recall their knowledge on the topic of friction gravity. The questions were designed to gain data if the students could recall the facts and information related to the topic.

Going further, the students were assigned to have two simple observation and investigation in order to answer the questions the next part of the test. The first observation dealing with force. They were given some objects and had to measure the mass of the objects and the amount of force needed to make the objects move using the forcemeter. By doing this, they also learned how to read the scales in the forcemeter as well as recorded the finding accurately in the chart.

The next observation dealt with identifying different types of surfaces and check which surface is easy for them to write on. They were given four different materials and had to identify if the surface is smooth or rough. Then, they needed to write something on the surfaces using marker to check if the surface is easy or hard for them to write on. By doing this, they learned to draw a conclusion that different types of surfaces will create different amount of friction that affect how they wrote on those surfaces.

The last part of the test required them to present their understanding on the concept when it is related to their daily activity. In this part of the test, they were given two pictures showing different cycling track. They had to choose which track that made cycling faster and easier. They needed to support their answer with reasons that shows their understanding on the concept of friction when applied in daily activity.

The students took the challenges enthusiastically. They did the observation and investigation seriously and recorded their finding as required. They also showed eagerness to finding the answers and drew a conclusion based on their observation. It is expected that their learning lasts longer in their memory as they experienced their own learning. Also, they are expected to bring their learning into daily life as well as giving meaning to it.
