Primary 3 – Science: Earth, the Sun and the Moon
The last topic to discuss in Science P3 was about Earth, the Sun and the Moon. Within the topic, the students learned that Earth, the Sun and the Moon are spherical in shape. This means that they are shaped like a ball. They also learned that there are many models that can be used in Science such as diagrams and physical models and they learned that a globe is a physical model that is used to model our Earth. Further, the students were given a chance to see a globe to learn that in a globe they can find countries, seas and oceans.
After learning about the shape of our Earth and the globe as the physical model of the Earth, the students were given a chance to make their own globe. First of all, teachers put them in groups of three or four and provide each group with a balloon. The next step, they need to wrap the balloon with some used newspaper and glue that they brought from home. As the balloons are fully covered with the paper, they need to let them dry before painting them in the following meeting. They needed to colour them blue and green. The blue will represent the oceans and the green represents the lands.
Working on this project, the students do not only learn Science as a lesson but they also learn how to contribute in a group, sharing job and responsibilities as well as shaping their thinking since they need to work step by step following the instruction set in order to create the assigned product. It is expected that they will be able to apply what they have learned in Science into their everyday life. It is also hoped that they can bring the thinking values they apply during learning Science into their thinking habit and culture in dealing with real-world challenges.
