Primary 2 – Science: Magic Torch Experiment

In Science, P2 students learned about Light and Darkness. Darkness happens when there is no light. We need light to see things around us. To understand the fact, students did a “Magic Torch” experiment. This experiment helps students to understand that we can see better when there is light.

Students prepared a business file, permanent markers, a piece of black paper and a piece of drawing paper. First, they drew an underwater scene or whatever scene they loved to draw on the clear part of business file. Then, they coloured the picture using permanent markers. After that, they put a piece of black paper under the drawing to make it less visible. The next step was they drew a torch using the drawing paper. They kept the lamp on the torch white so that it could be used to light up the underwater scene. Students brought the “Magic Torch” experiment home to show it to their family. They explained how to see things clearly in the darkness

Through this experiment, students learned to prove the fact that what they learned in the class is true in real-life setting. They can apply this knowledge in future daily life experience, for example when there is a black out in their neighbourhood, they know what to do to see things in the dark.

Aside from that, they also learned to use equipment properly and do practical work safely by following instructions. By following instructions and doing practical work safely, students engaged their problem-solving and analytical skills. It will enhance their ability to process information and make decisions which will be beneficial for their life.
