Primary 2 – Maths: Learning Division by Sharing Equally
At the beginning of Semester 2, Primary 2 students learnt about division through a fun and interactive activity. The lesson focused on understanding division by sharing equally.
First, the teacher invited one student to come to the front of the class and gave the student 8 cupcake figures. The teacher then asked the student to share the cupcakes equally with 2 friends. The student chose two classmates and demonstrated how to divide the cupcakes. He shared by giving the cupcakes one by one in turn to ensure that each friend get the same number of the cupcakes. As a result, each friend received 4 cupcakes.
Next, the teacher involved all students in the classroom to practise sharing equally. The students took 12 coloured pencils. The teacher asked them to imagine that the pencils would be shared equally among 3 people. The students showed different ways to divide the pencils. Some students made a mistake by separating the pencils into groups of three. However, after discussion, the teacher explained that all the pencils should be divided into 3 equal groups. Finally, the students understood that each person should receive 4 coloured pencils.
Through this interactive experience, students developed a stronger understanding of division as a fair-sharing process. They also became more confident in explaining their thinking, correcting mistakes, and solving division problems. Most importantly, students learnt that making mistakes is part of the learning process. Through discussion and reflection, they gained confidence to try again, adjust their strategies, and improve their understanding. This approach encourages a growth mindset and builds a strong foundation for problem-solving in future learning.
