Primary 2 – English: Orientation

Within orientation week, P2 students joined English diagnostic test on Tuesday, July 29th, 2025 and Wednesday, July 30th, 2025. The test was wrapped as fun activities, such as word race game, instruction mission and facts about me presentation.

In the word race game, students were asked to work in group. First level, they were listened to list of words and memorize the words with their group. After that, each member of each group took turn to mention the words in a minute. The second level of word race is writing list of words that they had read. While the last level, each group was asked to rearrange jumbled words into a sentence of encouragement to speak English. Based on the result, most of students were able to contribute well in group to finish the challenge. Each group showed good vocabulary skill as well.

On the next day, the students did instruction mission individually. They were challenged to be independent in reading and following the instructions given. Most of students could fulfil the challenge well and some students needed to be more careful in understanding the written instruction. Then, the last activity was ‘Fact About Me’ presentation. In the activity, each student made draft of facts about themselves on a piece of paper. After that, they were asked to present facts about me one by one.

Through these series fun activities in orientation week, students were expected to engage to English lesson. Students’ participation in the activities gave data for teacher about students’ background knowledge and also learning behaviour. Later on, teacher used the data to know students’ need so that it could be used to conduct meaningful English learning activities for P2 students.

Fun and meaningful activities in orientation week gave mutual benefits. For students, they were stimulated to work together with new classmate and environment so they could build their adaptability well. Having good adaptability will lead them to feel comfortable in learning and finally they achieve maximum learning result. While for teacher, the data gained from the activities could be used as a consideration in stimulating students to be independent learners. ***
