Primary 2: Build Metacognitive Tools to Master Their Own Learning
Last Friday, our Primary 2 students took part in a special lesson where they built their very own learning tools. These tools are meant to help them remember and use three important learning strategies: making a plan, checking their work, and thinking about how they did. Each student created a colorful, foldable tool that they can use during class time to guide their learning.
The lesson started with a quick review of the three strategies. Teachers showed the class how to put the tool together step by step. Students used their creativity to decorate their tools with markers, stickers, and drawings. As they worked, they talked about how each part of the tool would help them in their daily lessons, like planning before starting a task, checking their progress as they work, and looking back after finishing.
One of the best parts of the activity was when teachers asked the students, “Which strategy will you use first, and why?” This got the children thinking about their own learning habits. Some said they would start with planning to feel more organized, while others wanted to focus on checking their work to avoid mistakes. It was wonderful to hear them share their ideas so thoughtfully.
By the end of the lesson, every student had made a learning tool that was both useful and personal to them. This hands-on activity helped our young learners think about how they learn best. Their focus and creativity are admired, and it is expected that they will use these tools to become even more confident and independent learners. ***
