Primary 2: Bridge Building Challenge

Primary 2: Bridge Building Challenge

Last week, our Primary 2 engineers embarked on an exciting three-day mission to design and build their very own bridges from popsicle sticks and glue! The challenge was simple but thrilling: construct a bridge strong enough to hold a toy car. This project was about so much more than craft supplies; it was a hands-on lesson in planning, adapting, and brilliant teamwork.

The adventure kicked off on Wednesday with “Team Plan Time!”. Teams got together as master designers, sketching detailed plans and making big decisions. They debated the strongest shapes and assigned important jobs like “Glue Captain” and “Head Builder,” learning that every great creation starts with a solid, thoughtful plan.

Thursday was “Construction Day!” The classroom buzzed with energy as plans became reality. Teams faced real-world challenges and became super problem-solvers. They learned to monitor their progress, make quick changes, and work together to turn construction chaos into engineering triumphs.

The week finished with Friday’s “Grand Test!” The moment of truth arrived as each bridge was carefully loaded with weight. Everyone clapped and cheered when the bridges held the weight! To finish, the teams shared what worked and what they would do differently next time, proving they hadn’t just built bridges. They’d built confidence, resilience, and fantastic team spirit.

This project actively developed our students’ metacognitive skills. By going through the cycle of planning their designs, monitoring their progress during building, and evaluating their final product, they built a foundation for managing their own learning. These skills are fundamental to becoming independent, lifelong learners who can strategically approach any challenge, both inside and outside the classroom. ***
