Primary 1 – Science: Investigating Earth and the Sun
Primary 1 students recently concluded their Science unit with an engaging exploration of Earth and the Sun. They showed excitement when they observed the globe as model of the Earth and participated in group discussions to deepen their understanding of these important concepts. Through hands-on learning, students demonstrated both curiosity and enthusiasm throughout the activity.
Firstly, students identified some facts about Earth and the Sun. They learned that Earth is the planet where we live and that it is mostly covered by water, with land made up of rock and soil. They also recognized that the Sun is a star composed of hot, glowing gases that provide light and heat to Earth.
Moving forwards, students used models of the Sun, Earth, and Moon to get a better understanding about their relationships. By observing a globe, they explored how Earth is represented and began identifying different cities and countries. This helped them connect abstract scientific ideas with real-world representations.
Then, students worked collaboratively in groups to locate places on the globe and discuss how Earth’s scale can change in models. They shared ideas, encouraged one another, and analyzed how models help represent reality. This required them to apply their knowledge and think more critically about what they observed.
As the result, students reflected on how learning can happen through exploration and creativity. They realized that learning is not limited to textbooks but can be supported by models and self-created learning tools. This activity strengthened their scientific thinking, problem-solving skills, and independence. By engaging actively, they became more aware that knowledge can be built from their surroundings and experiences. Thus, it can help to prepare them facing future challenges confidently. Wow!
