Primary 1 – Mathematics: Let’s Estimate the Number of Eggs in the Nest
Primary 1 students have started their mathematics journey with Chapter 1: Number 0-20 (Estimate Numbers and Check the Number by Counting). At the beginning of the lesson on estimation, the teacher invited the students to think and estimate how many small balls could fit into a small paper bag. They mentioned several numbers that they thought were correct. They were exploring estimation in a fun and meaningful way using the theme of ‘eggs in a nest’. Students learnt to define what an estimate is and practiced making their first predictions about how many chicken eggs could fit in a paper nest.
Primary 1 students tested their predictions through a hands-on project. Working in pairs, they placed egg stickers onto the nest and compared their results with their original estimates. By checking the number through counting, students could see whether their estimates were too high, too low, or very close. This practice reinforced the chapter’s key skill: estimation must always be followed by checking the actual number.
Students shared their reasoning and strategies. Some of them noticed patterns such as grouping the eggs in rows or using the space around the nest more effectively. They discussed why their first estimation were different from the actual results and improved their predictions when given a new nest size. This discussion encouraged students to think more deeply, justify their answers, and listen to their peers’ ideas. This activity also built their basic understanding of the difference between guessing and estimating with a purpose.
Students were challenged with “what if” scenarios—what if the nest was larger, or the egg stickers were bigger? They explored how changing these variables would affect the number of eggs that fit. The activity not only strengthened skills in estimating numbers and checking by counting but also problem-solving, reasoning, and communication, making mathematics both engaging and meaningful for our Primary 1 learners. ***
