Primary 1 – English: Poem Performance
At the end of unit “Simple Rhyming Poems”, Primary 1 students had a chance to have poem performance on Tuesday, February 4th, 2025 in Indonesia room. For the performance, they chose one of the poems that had been discussed in English class. The poems that students could choose are “Rain” by Sigbjorn Obstfelder; “Lemonade in the Shade” by Jodi Simpson and “Hush Now” by Mike Barfield. All of the poems represented different weather.
Some days before the performance, the students made a list of the things needed to support their performance, such as outfit and other properties. At home, they practiced to recite the poem without text and prepare the outfit/properties as what they had planned at school. Choosing their own poem preference and planning the things related to the performance made students aware to this activity. The students got a chance to involve in their learning so that they could perform well on the performance day.
Through poem performance, teacher encouraged students to apply what they had learnt in the class. Poem performance boosted student’s courage to speak English in front of many people. It is expected to stimulate them in using English in daily.
By experiencing poem performance, Primary 1 student were stimulated to build their confidence in using English. Their involvement in preparation and practice showed them that learning is a process that should be done consistently. Hopefully, this activity boosts students’ excitement in learning English. At the end, they have awareness in improving their English ability.
