Nursery – Maths: Counting Goats
Nursery students learnt concept of number through a story. Previously, they listened to the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Teachers helped students providing a play mat representing the grassland and the dry land, as well as the goats puppets as the characters in the story. Students were encouraged to make up the story imagining that they helped some goats to cross the bridge to go to the grassland. They were given a number and asked to help some goats, as many as the number, to cross the bridge.
Learning math concept through a story helped students to connect their imagination to the real learning experience. Not only enhancing their story comprehension, students will also easier to understand the concept of number itself, as they use objects they can handle. Counting often involves moving objects, which helps to develop motoric skills. As children handle items while counting, they improve their hand-eye coordination. Counting objects is a brain workout for students. It enhances their memory and attention. As they count, students also learn to focus and remember sequences.
Counting objects lays the groundwork for students’ math skills and logical thinking that are also beneficial for students in solving problems.
