Nursery – English: Planting seeds
In English lesson, Nursery have learnt vocabularies related to their environment, such as stone, pebble, and tree. To enhance their vocabulary development, additional words such as plant, leaf, and grass were introduced. Beyond learning new vocabularies, students were also guided to understand the process of plant growth.
To begin the lesson, students watched the story “Jasper’s Beanstalk,” which illustrates the stages of planting a seed, nurturing it, and observing its growth into a big and tall plant. Students also recognise the vocabularies (e.g. plant, leaves) through the story. Following this, students engaged in a practical learning experience by planting seeds themselves. They participated in each step of the process — digging the soil, placing the seeds, and watering them.
This learning activity provided students with valuable real-life experience, allowing them to engage their senses in observing, feeling, and recognising world around them. Furthermore, the activity aimed to foster students’ awareness of environmental care and to show respect on the growing process of a plant. It also encouraged the development of patience, responsibility, and empathy as students took care of their plants.
It is hoped that through this meaningful experience, students will develop and demonstrate positive attitudes toward caring for the plants in their surroundings. ***
