Nursery – Arts: Making an Ant
Our Nursery students had an exciting learning experience while exploring one of the minibeasts around us — ants. At the beginning of the lesson, students learned about the characteristics of ants, such as their small bodies, how they move in lines, and how they work together to collect food. Through this discussion, students also learned an important value from ants: cooperation and teamwork.
After the discussion, students continued the lesson with a fun art and craft activity. They coloured the ant’s head, stamped the ant’s body using a potato stamp, and created the ant’s legs by tearing brown paper. Finally, they pasted the coloured head and the torn paper legs onto the stamped body to complete their ant artwork.
This activity provided many learning benefits for students. For now, students developed their fine motor skills, hand–eye coordination, creativity, and concentration through colouring, stamping, tearing, and pasting. They also strengthened their observation skills as they connected what they learned about ants with their artwork.
For the future, these skills will support students in developing early writing readiness, problem-solving skills, and creativity. Learning about the teamwork of ants also helps children understand the importance of cooperating, helping others, and working together, which are essential social skills for their future learning and daily life.
