Early Year 2 – Science: Building Bridge
EY2 students explored the exciting challenge of building bridges through a hands-on activity. The lesson began with a discussion where students shared their experiences about crossing bridges and talked about how bridges help people move from one place to another. They also observed pictures of different types of bridges and began thinking about an important question: What makes a bridge strong?
After the discussion, the students became young bridge engineers. Working in small groups, they explored various classroom materials such as paper, cardboard, straws, and wooden blocks. Using their creativity and imagination, the students designed and built their own bridges between two surfaces. During the process, they experimented with different ideas, collaborated with their teammates, and made improvements when their bridges needed to be stronger or more stable.
The most exciting moment came when the students tested their bridges. They carefully placed objects such as blocks on top to see how much weight their bridges could hold. Through this experiment, students discovered that strong bridges need good support and balance. They also practiced problem-solving as they observed what worked well and what needed to be improved.
This activity encouraged creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking. By exploring, building, and improving their bridges, the students experienced how people design solutions to solve everyday problems while developing confidence in trying new ideas.
