Early Year 2 – Science: Building A Bridge
EY2 students recently explored problem-solving through an exciting hands-on project: building bridges. Imagining a river they needed to cross, the students were tasked with delivering goods using toy vehicles—but first, they had to construct a bridge using materials such as paper, popsicle sticks, and straws.
Working in teams, the students tested different materials to see which could support the weight of their vehicles. Some bridges collapsed, but this didn’t stop them. They continued experimenting, adjusting their designs, and finding new solutions to strengthen their structures.
Through this engaging activity, students developed not only creativity and collaboration skills, but also resilience. They learned the importance of perseverance—of trying again even when things didn’t go as planned.
Building resilience helps students gain confidence, overcome challenges, and believe in their own problem-solving abilities. Experiences like this lay the foundation for a growth mindset and a lifelong love of learning. ***
