Early Year 2 – Science: Bubbling Emotions
Today, the EY2 children continued their exploration of emotions such as happy, sad, angry, excited, worried, scared, and calm. They discussed when these feelings arise and what might cause them. The teachers also explained that emotions, whether positive like happiness and excitement or negative like sadness and anger, are natural. It is absolutely fine to feel them all, and even difficult emotions can be managed wisely.
To deepen understanding, the children joined a “tubes of emotion” experiment. A few poured baking soda carefully into bottles, while the others observed as vinegar was added. Food colouring had been hidden, creating a sense of mystery. When the colourful mixtures bubbled and overflowed, the children responded with amazement, linking each colour to different feelings.
Such activities provide multiple benefits. They spark curiosity and strengthen early scientific thinking, while also building observation and prediction skills. More importantly, they support emotional literacy, showing children that feelings can be named, expressed, and accepted. Reflecting on the session, the children showed growing confidence in recognising emotions and delight in discovering that every feeling has its place. ***
