Early Year 2 – Outdoor Learning Project: Developing Observation, Thinking, and Responsibility Through Betta Fish Care
As part of the learning in the theme “Exploring Life Under Water”, EY2 students took part in an outdoor learning program by visiting Depok Pet Market. The trip was organised in small groups, starting with EY2 Milan, followed by EY2 Madrid A, and concluding with EY2 Madrid B in the afternoon session. Travelling together in school vehicles, the children practised safe behaviour while commuting and learned how to move responsibly in public spaces.
Upon arrival at the market, the children enthusiastically observed a wide variety of ornamental fish and other aquatic animals. They asked thoughtful questions to the sellers and discussed what they noticed with their teachers and peers. Each child then selected and purchased a betta fish, practising simple transaction skills by paying with their own money and receiving change. This hands-on experience helped them connect learning with real-life situations.
Following the visit, the children began a two-week Project Based Learning activity by caring for their betta fish at home. They will observe daily changes, record their experiences in a simple journal, and later share their stories in class. Through this project, children develop observation skills, responsibility, and a deeper understanding of caring for living things.
