Early Year 2 – Maths: Under the Sea Magic Flashlight
Through the Under the Sea Magic Flashlight experience, EY2 students engaged in mathematical learning in an imaginative and meaningful way. The activity sparked children’s curiosity as they explored the idea of darkness in the deep ocean and learned that some sea animals can produce light.
While working in small groups, students collaborated and took turns to trace ocean scenes onto transparent sheets placed over white paper. When the background was changed to black paper, the images disappeared and then reappeared when light was shone through with a flashlight. This “magic” effect helped maintain children’s focus and encouraged them to stay engaged throughout the activity.
As students shared their work, they identified the numbers shown in their ocean scenes. Through this process, children developed number recognition while also practicing cooperation, communication, and confidence during group learning. Overall, the activity supported numeracy development and positive learning behaviors in an enjoyable and meaningful way.
