Early Year 2 – Maths: Telling Time

EY2 students were introduced to some fascinating facts about one of the sea creatures called the octopus. They learned about its unique features, such as its ability to escape from predators. One interesting fact is that when an octopus feels threatened, it squirts ink into the water to blind its predator and make its escape.

To provide a vivid visual experience, students were invited to place black paint into pipettes. They were encouraged to squeeze the paint into the water and observe the swirling patterns. The students were also asked to identify objects around the school that use ink, such as markers and printers. Furthermore, they explored how ink works by using it to write numbers on a circle of paper to create a clock and add hands. The teacher engaged the students in discussions about daily activities and their connection to the concept of time. The students were then guided through a hands-on activity, where they moved the hands of the clock based on given instructions.

This activity helped students connect their learning to everyday life, encouraging them to think creatively and find solutions, much like the octopus. It also sparked their curiosity as they gained hands-on experience with how ink works, while promoting logical thinking about telling time through daily routines.
