Early Year 2 – Maths: Subtraction in Motion
In Maths lesson, EY2 children were introduced to the concept of subtraction through a fun and active activity about ocean waves. The teacher explained that when things fall away, the number becomes smaller. Children listened, observed, and began to connect numbers with real actions they could see and feel.
The learning then became physical and collaborative. Standing in a circle, the children held a large parachute and moved it up and down together to create waves. The teacher placed several objects on top of the parachute. As the waves grew bigger, some objects fell off. Each time this happened, the children counted how many objects were left and talked about how the number had changed.
This activity was highly engaging and joyful. Learning subtraction through movement helped children understand the concept in a concrete way. It also developed teamwork, coordination, and problem-solving skills, making Maths meaningful, memorable, and enjoyable for young learners.
