Early Year 2 – Maths: String Maze Game
EY2 students took part in an exciting String Maze Game to practise their addition skills. The lesson began with a short review of simple sums up to ten. After the review, the teacher explained the rules of the game and prepared the classroom by tying yarn across chairs and tables to create a large maze, with Addition Cards placed along the path.
Working in pairs, the students carefully navigated the maze like true “Math Adventurers.” Each pair collected one card and, once outside the maze, quickly solved the problem. This activity encouraged students to apply their knowledge in a playful yet focused environment. It required more than just recalling answers — students also had to concentrate, manage their time, and choose the most efficient strategy to complete the task.
The String Maze Game effectively combined physical movement with mathematical thinking. It supported the development of number fluency, encouraged persistence, and promoted collaboration, making the learning experience both meaningful and enjoyable. ***
