Early Year 2 – Maths: Little Plant Market

The classroom turned into a lively little plant market as the children explored the value of money from Rp1,000 to Rp5,000. Connected to the theme Getting to Know Plants, the role-play activity invited children to become buyers and sellers of plant pots, seeds, and watering cans. With play money in hand, they eagerly asked questions such as, “How much is this?” before choosing the correct amount to pay.

The children playing the role of sellers had an equally important task. They needed to check whether the money they received matched the price and decide if change was needed. Some paused to count carefully, while others worked together to solve small mistakes. Through these playful interactions, mathematical thinking became something practical, social, and enjoyable.

After the role-play, the children completed a worksheet by matching and sticking the correct money pictures to the prices shown. Activities like this help children understand that mathematics is closely connected to everyday life. Beyond recognising numbers and money values, they also develop communication skills, confidence, problem-solving, and the ability to make thoughtful decisions in real situations.
