Early Year 2 – Maths: Build with Friends
Today, the EY2 students took part in a creative Maths lesson that combined problem-solving, teamwork, and imagination. Using construction kits such as magnetic blocks, Lego, and colourful wooden domino blocks, they worked in groups to build houses, towers, and hotels while practising cooperation and sharing ideas.
For the Maths challenge, each student received a house part—such as a wall, a roof, or a tree—with an addition problem. After solving the sum correctly and having it checked by the teacher, they coloured their piece and joined it with their friends’ pieces to complete a house. The students then added extra drawings like the sun, clouds, or plants to make their creations unique and meaningful, extending the activity into an open-ended exploration that encouraged creativity, imagination, and personal expression.
This activity helped them deepen their understanding of addition, while also strengthening collaboration, communication, and creativity. They learnt that Maths can be meaningful, joyful, and best experienced together. In the end, they discovered that by solving problems and sharing ideas, they were building not only houses but also friendships and teamwork skills. ***
