Early Year 2 – Maths and Arts: Exploring Patterns Through Luggage Craft and Role Play
Building on their lesson about airplane procedures, EY2 students took their learning to the next level with a hands-on activity that blended math, art, and role-play. The day before, they had explored the steps of riding an airplane, including checking in, boarding, and taking off. Today, they brought this knowledge to life by creating and decorating their own paper luggage.
The activity began with students designing their luggage using patterns. They applied their understanding of shape patterns, number patterns, and color patterns, reinforcing basic math concepts as they worked. This step challenged students to identify and create repeating sequences, helping them understand how patterns create order and structure. Through this creative process, they made connections between math and art, exploring how both disciplines involve rhythm and repetition.
Once their luggage was complete, students participated in a role-play activity where they pretended to go on vacation and travel by plane. During the role-play, they practiced the airplane procedures they had learned—such as checking in their luggage, finding their seats, and pretending to take off. This immersive experience allowed them to apply their new knowledge in a real-world context, developing both their understanding of travel and their social skills through teamwork and collaboration.
This activity provided a well-rounded learning experience by combining mathematical concepts, creativity, and practical application. Students are left with not only colorful, personalized luggage but also a deeper understanding of patterns, travel procedures, and the joy of imaginative play. By integrating math, art, and role-play, the activity demonstrated how learning can be both engaging and meaningful. ***
