Early Year 2 – Math: Cardboard Maze

EY2 students recently took on an exciting project: creating a maze using recycled cardboard and straws. This hands-on activity not only encouraged creativity but also promoted the importance of sustainability and teamwork. The project kicked off with a discussion about reusing materials, helping students understand how everyday items can be transformed into something both fun and useful.

As they designed and built their mazes, the students worked together, brainstorming ideas and actively listening to one another. This collaborative process not only strengthened their social skills but also fostered a sense of community within the class. Once their creations were complete, the mazes became interactive learning tools, where students navigated marbles through the paths they had designed. This playful challenge enhanced their problem-solving abilities, fine motor skills, and spatial awareness—all while having fun.

At the conclusion of the activity, the students reflected on their experience, expressing pride in their teamwork and a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility. The cardboard maze project was a fantastic example of how creativity, sustainability, and collaboration can come together to create a meaningful learning experience. It prepared our young learners to think critically, work cooperatively, and approach challenges with innovative solutions—valuable skills for their futures. ***
