Early Year 2 – Learning Project Recycled Robot: Turning Trash into Imagination
Before the project even began, excitement filled the children’s homes. Over the weekend, they were invited to collect used materials such as bottles, boxes, and tubes, and to watch Robot Rumpus—a delightful story about robots that help people in everyday life. This simple home-link inspired family conversations about recycling and encouraged children to imagine what kind of robot they might one day build.
On Day 1, the classroom buzzed with curiosity. The children explored baskets of used items, shared their ideas, and learned that something old could be transformed into something new. Designing their own “dream robot” helped them express creativity, practise communication, and understand how imagination can turn waste into wonder.
Day 2 brought deeper thinking. Through thoughtful questions like “How can your robot help people?”, children reflected on purpose and problem-solving. They carefully selected materials—most from their own collections, while the school provided extras such as bottle caps, pipe cleaners, and glue—learning to make decisions and justify their choices.
By Day 3, the making began. Little engineers planned, attached, adjusted, and improved their first prototypes. Each challenge became a lesson in resilience and teamwork. More than building robots, the children were building awareness—of caring for the planet, valuing creativity, and finding joy in every small discovery.
Projects like this nurture early critical thinking, responsibility, and innovation. They remind us that young learners thrive when they explore, create, and care. What will happen next as our young inventors continue their robot adventure in Day 4 and 5? Stay tuned to find out! ***
